Pastor Sam Lewis - the origins of Living That Matters

I have spent over forty years listening to, observing and coaching people in relationships. I have learned a great deal from those years of experience about how people relate. Those experiences have given me many illustrations and some understanding which will help me to articulate the principles and values that I want to share with you through Living That Matters.

However, I did not learn these principles and values from that experience. I learned them through careful study of God’s word while asking Him for wisdom to understand how He designed His universe. That study was guided by some amazing mentors, men of God, who invested in my life.

Often, during the many years I have been teaching these principles, people have asked me why I have not written a book on the things that I teach. My answer is twofold. First, I say it is because the book has already been written. It is called the Bible. But the real reason is because while books can give you information, inspiration or even an inclination toward right living, they rarely ensure transformation.

In my experience, transformation is better attained with accountability, through constant and consistent reaffirmation of truth. I call this coaching. The Bible calls it discipleship. Change comes through relationship. While I was writing the book, "Living That Matters" I struggled with this dilemma. I wanted the book somehow to be interactive. I wanted to find a way to move from information to transformation. I thought maybe I would do an eBook with links to resources encouraging growth. But I wanted more. I wanted to be able to duplicate what I had done in my relationship with many families. This is what gave birth to the Living That Matters paradigm and the My Family Values way of life.  It is a way to integrate the book with tools and resources and most of all community. It is a community of people with the same values working together to live by God's design. Watch the video below for a more complete explanation.
